$20 Product Bundle for $100+ value 30 RPG/tabletop titles (for CARE Syrian Refugees)

http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/171339/Roleplayers-Without-Borders-BUNDLE
$20 (USD) for $110+ in printable accessories
Hosted by Brave Adventures
Profits will go to CARE with the intention of aiding refugees fleeing the Syrian civil war.
http://www.care.org/emergencies/syria-crisis/care-for-refugees
I'm boosting this one up to eleven.  The Canadian government has pledged to match all donations made to registered Canadian charities with relief efforts for Syrian refugees until February 29th, 2016.  Seven publishers who specialise in paper vehicles, scenery and printable minis, from around the world, have donated over 30 products to this bargain bundle hosted by Brave Adventures  (up until 29th February 2016 - provisional date in line with the Canadian Govt. deadline).  Some of my own Inked Adventures titles are included here, and it's always an honour to be listed with other talented artists and innovative indie tabletop publishers.  Not only is this an important and immediate cause but it also is a damn fine bargain of a bundle.  Below are the cover graphics for the titles - visit the bundle page for full descriptions. Thanks. :)

Transmissions coming in from a convention somewhere

I know most us aren't actually at GenCon2015, but you are following all the feeds, right?  Being a bit of an old-schooler actual news about games is washing over me somewhat, but I'm really enjoying how many people are willing to deliver the experience of actually being there by photographing display stands, stalls and cosplayers.  Just a quick browse of any network with Gencon tags is like snorkelling in a geeky Wonderland.

Loving it, guys!  Here's to all the one-the-spot reporters and sharers. :)

Warning: may contain cosplay.

I would embed these but I fear my blog would break.

Bring a little OSR into your Star Wars Day

For Star Wars (I have a lisp) Day, I couldn't resist a special offer over at Tenkar's Tavern for a copy of White Star - a scifi game which builds on the simplicity of Swords&Wizardry's WhiteBox rules (OD&D simulcrum).  Naturally the Star Knights aren't actually called "Jedi". But we know. ;)  It could be just the terminology, but so far it reminds me a bit of Tales of the Space Princess.  These games go to the heart of cinematic soap opera, conjuring images of swashbuckling Flash Gordon right through to the battered technology in  Star Wars.

May The Way/Force/Psionics Be With You!

Shadowrun RPG doing rather well

Shadowrun Fifth Edition by Catalyst Game Labs

Back in the mid to late 80s I was a bit of a genre purist and the likes of Rifts and Shadowrun just crossed too many thematic streams for my liking. By choosing Cyberpunk (v2.0.2.0) I was voting for games where the near future was a Gibsonesque human-plus-technology affair only. In rertospect, I think I may have missed out on quite a bit of fun. Out of all of the games which have been reprinted, re-promoted and rereleased -for up to five editions, no less- the resilience of the Shadowrun RPG still comes as a surprise to me. It’s been a number one hotseller on DTRPG for a handful of weeks now which is no mean feat for a $20USD PDF (which is a totally reasonable price for an established RPG PDF although I suspect that the original price of $59.99 is based on the printed copy).

With 15,000 hard-copies sold, clearing the stock entirely, Catalyst Game Labs sound a bit taken aback also: ;)
Every time I think the Shadowrun community can’t surprise me with their brilliance, they surprise me again,” said Randall N. Bills, Catalyst’s Managing Developer. “We were confident we’d sell out by end of the year, but in mere weeks?! Once again, Shadowrun players stepped up in a fantastic way, showing how much life beats within the Sixth World … and how much life yet beats in the tabletop roleplaying community as a whole!

Deviant Database -for Mutant Future (Tim Snyder TSAW)

<--- This arrived today.  The Deviant Database!

Edit: Links -
Deviant Database on RPGDriveThru
Deviant Database print book on Lulu.com
(alternative link)

I did not see the sorry mutant who had left it in the plastic toy box which I leave out at Rad-Ridge on barter day.  The thing had taken the scale-fruit remains and left the valuable cabling, no accounting for taste.   My claws clumsily fumbled with the package ...

Thank you Mr Tim Snyder of The Savage Afterworld.  Tonight's dreams will be both creepy and exotic.

The Deviant Database is a supplementary "Monster Manual" for the GammaWorld-like  Mutant Future - the main rulebook of which I'm still waiting to arrive for from Lulu - I've gone for the hardback btw.

It seems to be common knowledge that Mutant Future is compatible with Goblinoid's other games, such as Labyrinth Lord (which is a D&D/retro-clone), so the one use of the Deviant Database is that in can be used to spice up any old-style D&D campaign - especially, those with a surreal or other-wordly twist - such as Sword and Planet setting games, Spelljammer aliens, planar adventures - scenarios where the classically mythological can be set aside for the truly strange or aberrant.  Examples include: skunkapes, creatures with laser vision, Cheetapedes, and many of B-movie anti-Darwinistic hybrids.  One whichstands out is the, quite literally, insane Mechanibal - robot predators who harvest and graft parts  to themselves of other robots (and other technology).  I imagine that these robots could be hundreds of years old, perhaps in continuous "pain" and in hatred of their "meatbag" creators.  Perhaps there's an opportunity for a being like this to appear in steampunk games (consider the "Warforged" of Eberron - but the failed Frankensteinian experiments sealed up in vaults) .  And that's just one creature.

I've owned a copy of Gamma World for many years, but it was an edition I'm not fond of - with colour-coded charts and missing rules of really basic stuff, like vehicles and equipment price lists (fundamental things!) Also the exploratory introduction modules seemed a bit too abstract -not enough context.  More recently I've really enjoyed reading through The Mutant Epoch - for which the character generation and dice mechanics are sublime, but it uses it's own system - so I'm really looking to dipping into Mutant Future, just because I'm hoping that I'll be in familiar territory game mechanic wise. (By the way the system in TME is good, it's just sometimes the old brain can only cope with Basic D&D) My other, also surreal, foray into mutated futures is the facsimile of the original Metamorphosis Alpha by Jim Ward - truly wonderful from a historical perspective, but can also be appreciated as a really straight forward (nearly-pick-up-and-play) rule-set.

(I'll probably add some more product links to this post at a later time.)

You should leave now.  Take this plastic spear.
Good luck out there.
The Bad-Zone gets quieter just before morning...

Over the Edge RPG 20th Anniversary Edition

Over the Edge RPG
special 20th Ann. ed.
$75 on Amazon
See also:
Atlas Games direct: $75
Noble Knight $68 +p&p
"...Welcome to Al Amarja, the mysterious Mediterranean island that is home to all that is sinister and bizarre. If it troubles you in your dreams, if it scares you, if you hope it isn't true, you'll find it here. This is the setting of Over the Edge, the roleplaying game of surreal danger..."

Atlas Games are doing a limited print run of 400 hardbacked high quality signed copies of the Over the Edge RPG - the sinister, classically paranoid, RPG game by Jonathon Tweet and Robin D Laws - originally published in 1992 - which is why it's a 20th anniversary edition.   All hail the celebration of time!  Everyone gets to buy everything again!

Strangely enough, I don't remember seeing this game much in the shops but I did randomly buy a CCG card pack of the same franchise, On the Edge - which appeared influenced by the magical (un-)realities of William Burroughs.  Nice art, strange ideas, utterly unplayable. ;)

It was during my dark times in the early 1990s when RPGs in (my jaded, twisted version of) the UK vanished from displays in shops like Games Workshop and Virgin Megastore, and at best were hidden at the back of comic shops.  Or maybe, instead of games shopping, I was trying to focus on not failing my Drama degree (which was in an ancient college, in a field, in Yorkshire, with no cash machine, limited phones and no internet, oh god... make the memories go away...).

Atlas Games product description:
The Over the Edge 20th Anniversary Edition Features:
  • Limited Edition: The printing is of only 400 of this collector's item. The books are individually numbered, and signed by game designer Jonathan Tweet, on an attractive color bookplate.
  • Deluxe Binding: Featuring a dark blue leatherette hardcover with gold foil stamped logo and high-quality smythe sewing.
  • Premium Interior: A NEW 16-page full-color section introduces the book, while the interior is a reprint of the B&W 2nd Edition on premium coated paper stock.
  • Exclusive Extras: The new introduction includes essays by Jonathan Tweet, Robin Laws, Greg Stolze, Keith Baker, and John Nephew. Plus a newly commissioned 2-page full-color map of the island of Al Amarja and quotes from fans.
This Georgian Gentlemen peruses
his collection of special anniversary
role-playing game reprints from
his bestoke-for-the-task built library
(incidentally, he has a whole other
chamber dedicated to the
preservation of rare
polyhedral dice)
This cover reminds me a little of some of Chaosium's special editions.  I sometimes wonder why publishers don't provide glossy dust jackets with the original art - you would then have the option to display the book with or without the dust cover.  Those AD&D reprints partly addressed this with the embossed silvered "homage" art in the centre whilst still retaining the look of something which wouldn't be out of place in an Edwardian gentlemen's personal library.  Naturally, we all want to be Edwardian gentlemen, with plush leather chairs near a fire, within easy reach of shelves lined with brown and wine coloured tomes, with a glass of port in hand... This edition of Over of the Edge is clearly only available to the discerning - with a price to match.  It would be awful if it fell into vulgar hands.

And these copies will be signed!
(I hope Jonathan Tweet has a rubber stamp - 400 copies is a lot of scribble. "Enjoy -J. Tweet" "Don't go mental, Jonathon T." "What no dice? JT" ...)

The Over the Edge RPG 20th Anniversary Edition is $75 on Amazon, and at Atlas Games.  It looks like you might be able to save a few dollars if you buy from  Noble Knight Games: $68 +shipping
