I did not see the sorry mutant who had left it in the plastic toy box which I leave out at Rad-Ridge on barter day. The thing had taken the scale-fruit remains and left the valuable cabling, no accounting for taste. My claws clumsily fumbled with the package ...
Thank you Mr Tim Snyder of The Savage Afterworld. Tonight's dreams will be both creepy and exotic.
The Deviant Database is a supplementary "Monster Manual" for the GammaWorld-like Mutant Future - the main rulebook of which I'm still waiting to arrive for from Lulu - I've gone for the hardback btw.
It seems to be common knowledge that Mutant Future is compatible with Goblinoid's other games, such as Labyrinth Lord (which is a D&D/retro-clone), so the one use of the Deviant Database is that in can be used to spice up any old-style D&D campaign - especially, those with a surreal or other-wordly twist - such as Sword and Planet setting games, Spelljammer aliens, planar adventures - scenarios where the classically mythological can be set aside for the truly strange or aberrant. Examples include: skunkapes, creatures with laser vision, Cheetapedes, and many of B-movie anti-Darwinistic hybrids. One whichstands out is the, quite literally, insane Mechanibal - robot predators who harvest and graft parts to themselves of other robots (and other technology). I imagine that these robots could be hundreds of years old, perhaps in continuous "pain" and in hatred of their "meatbag" creators. Perhaps there's an opportunity for a being like this to appear in steampunk games (consider the "Warforged" of Eberron - but the failed Frankensteinian experiments sealed up in vaults) . And that's just one creature.
I've owned a copy of Gamma World for many years, but it was an edition I'm not fond of - with colour-coded charts and missing rules of really basic stuff, like vehicles and equipment price lists (fundamental things!) Also the exploratory introduction modules seemed a bit too abstract -not enough context. More recently I've really enjoyed reading through The Mutant Epoch - for which the character generation and dice mechanics are sublime, but it uses it's own system - so I'm really looking to dipping into Mutant Future, just because I'm hoping that I'll be in familiar territory game mechanic wise. (By the way the system in TME is good, it's just sometimes the old brain can only cope with Basic D&D) My other, also surreal, foray into mutated futures is the facsimile of the original Metamorphosis Alpha by Jim Ward - truly wonderful from a historical perspective, but can also be appreciated as a really straight forward (nearly-pick-up-and-play) rule-set.
(I'll probably add some more product links to this post at a later time.)
You should leave now. Take this plastic spear.
Good luck out there.
The Bad-Zone gets quieter just before morning...

TME Mall of Doom, IA Demon Chamber, Fields of War
>> EDIT: July 2011: Mall of Doom is now out - buy the PDF on DriveThru. <<
Fans, customers and subscribers of Outland Arts' The Mutant Epoch RPG have been treated to a preview of the latest 136 page campaign adventure book, The Mall of Doom.
The quality and quantity of output of William McAusland's art is truly awe-inspiring. Mutant Epoch is also a really great game to boot - it's in my eyes the game Gamma World should have become (The Mutant Epoch RPG - PDF on DriveThru).
Check out the art.(If the link doesn't work at least subscribe to the Outland Arts feed.)

Perspective mock-up (made in GIMP) of Inked Adventures Encounter- Lairs 1 : Demon Chamber |
I'm hoping to bring this set out immanently on RPGNow/DriveThruRPG pending my blaming of different computers, crashes, the day job, and bad personal time management, too much time spent on blogs and Facebook for example .... ;)
Check out this cool advert graphic for Inked Adventures I knocked together. It's like the 90s never happened.
See the Inked Adventures page for links.
Playtesters Wanted!
Jagged Jaw at Fields of War has asked me to put a shout out for play testers for his war torn campaign world. I can't tell you much more about what sort of a system the game uses, but Mr Jaw is writing a lot of cool background blurb and will send you free rules if you want to participate. So pop over to his blog and hammer him with questions! Jagged Jaw is clearly very creative, if not a little unhinged. ;) You have been warned!
Ooh, it's Wednesday. (Tries not to sneak off to Evil DM's blog...)
Thanks for reading. - Billiam B. 22.06.11

Shopping and weekend reading
Just a quick post. I really really must get on with drawing those tomb's pack dungeon sections. Lord knows what it's like for people actually planning whole campaigns. ;)
Shopping...
...on Ebay, as a matter of fact, but not for old collectables, but for cheap scenery solutions.
For 99p ($1.60 USDappx) plus postage one can purchase 5 respectable laser etched MDF dungeon doors with bases suitable for use with 25-30mm miniatures. I'm thinking about painting mine with a very light colour wash - I bought 10. They're probably ideal for use with a battle-mat or printed plans to provide that extra 3D element. A random bargain. They also sell a selection on MDF bases for figures - hexagons, squares etc and a massive dice rolling tower. Most curious. :)

So if I disappear into an Astral Gate, with nothing but panicked mumblings left on a datapad and a map of the subway etched onto a coke can, don't come looking for me. It's already too late.

Tentacles!
FEAR of Tentacles! |
My therapist told me not to worry about the slithering, tapping and smothering in my nightmares. A fear of tentacles was only natural for a person like myself. After all, he explained, humans for not ready for the truth, not worthy of the dark wisdom, not ready for the future, the beautiful catastrophes. As usual, he told me to leave an offering and blow out the candles on the way out. When I got home, amidst the shadows, I feverishly searched for the sources of my recent dreams:
YOU Have Tentacles! |
- 1950s Cthullu-paranoid escapades in the by Pegrane Press for the Trail of Cthullu (in-house system) - it appears fairly adaptable to older systems. A great setting, clever twists.
The Mutant Epoch (PDF Also available in book form on Lulu)
- Post apocalyptic goodness! So many mutations, so much hardware, lots of lovely tables. A fast paced old-style RPG written and lusciously monochromicly illustrated by William McAusland of Outland Arts. I'll definitely be writing more on this soon.
SHUSH! There's a CGI Tentacle. |
- It's a type of road movie with improvised acting and the occasional glimpse of "the creatures". Enjoy the amazing natural scenery, enjoy all of the "Danger" road signs, but don't expect too much in way or explanation of closure. ;)
_
They're in there, in my dreams, in the fated future.
I can't stay awake forever
... can I?
